The practice of a traditional martial art is challenging, but the most important and difficult step is showing up to class the first time. Our classes are free to YMCA members, and we encourage you to come train with us or watch a class. We will do our best to introduce you to our practice and answer any questions you may have.

What is Shorin-Ryu Karate?

An authentic style of traditional Okinawan karate-do, as it has been practiced for centuries. Its emphasis is the kata or forms, which are the essence of karate. Through dedicated training, the student will build strength, stamina, flexibility, balance and agility over time.

As the student grows and develops as a martial artist, the training will also reveal the mental and philosophical aspects of karate, which are essential to a deep understanding of the art.

Benefits

With sincere effort, the practice of karate-do has many benefits:

  • Develops Physical Fitness
  • Builds Inner-Strength
  • Strengthens Discipline
  • Teaches Self-Defense
  • Provides Stress Relief

Our Training

Led by Chief Instructor Sensei Emiliano Mazlen, our traditional classes focus on the development of the deshi, or student, primarily through the practice of kata.

Kata practice is often supplemented with calisthenics, repetition of the self-defense techniques that make up the kata, and controlled partner exercises.

Our training requires no special equipment and can be done anywhere, at any time.
